Armenia to Acquire Su-30MKI Multirole Fighter Jets from India

Armenia is nearing completion of a landmark defense agreement with India to acquire Su-30MKI multirole fighter jets produced by Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Indian Defence News reports.

The deal, valued between $2.5 and $3 billion, is in its final negotiation stage and is seen as a strategic response to Azerbaijan’s purchase of 40 Pakistan-made JF-17C Block-III fighters. It further deepens defense ties between Yerevan and New Delhi, following contracts for Pinaka rocket systems, Swathi radars, and advanced anti-tank munitions.

According to the plan, Armenia will initially receive 8 to 12 Su-30MKI aircraft in the first phase, accompanied by pilot training, maintenance infrastructure, and weapons integration support. Deliveries are expected to begin by late 2027, with full transfer completed by 2029, aligned with HAL’s ongoing production commitments for the Indian Air Force.

The Su-30MKI acquisition will significantly enhance Armenia’s long-range air combat and deterrence capabilities, while reducing dependence on Russian systems. The Armenian variant is expected to feature Indian-developed upgrades, including the Uttam AESA radar, Astra Mk-1 and Mk-2 long-range missiles, and DRDO electronic warfare systems—providing a distinct technological edge over Azerbaijan’s JF-17C fleet.

For India, the agreement marks one of its largest defense export achievements, expanding HAL’s global footprint and strengthening New Delhi’s strategic presence in the Caucasus amid shifting regional dynamics involving Turkey, Pakistan, and Russia.

Experts note the deal underscores Armenia’s pivot toward India as a key defense partner, while reinforcing India’s image as a reliable and capable arms supplier in Eurasia.
