BRICS Begins 18th Summit in Delhi
In spite of major differences and rivalry amongst some of the members India was able to pull out a joint BRICS Declaration, with a strongly worded clause on terrorism and the Pahalgam terror attacks of 2025.

Delhi: India is holding the 18th BRICS Summit from 12-13 September. From the initial five members – Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa – the bloc has expanded to include six more members – Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, UAE and Indonesia. It also has ten partner countries.
First mooted in 2006 between India, Russia and China, in Russia ‘s Ekaterinburg, this year the grouping is celebrating its 20th anniversary.
During the Summit 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi says, “I express my heartfelt gratitude to all of you for your active contribution and support in making India’s BRICS chairmanship a success. This year’s BRICS summit marks a historic milestone. We are celebrating the 20th anniversary of BRICS. In human life, the age of 20 marks the beginning of a new phase of maturity and responsibility.”
The first summit was held in 2009, also in Russia.
The theme for this summit is
World leaders attending the summit including Russian President Vladimir Putin, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Abu Dhabi Crown Prince Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan Egyptian President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi, and Kazakh President Kassym Jiomart Tokayev.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said BRICS has reached a “coming of age” moment after two decades of growth, urging member nations to transform the bloc’s unity and consensus into tangible outcomes on the global stage.
Addressing the BRICS Summit 2026, he said the grouping had built a distinct global identity by respecting diverse viewpoints, advancing through consensus, and seeking progress by taking all nations along rather than opposing any.
