US, Iran Unveil Framework Agreement To Stop Hostilities, Reopening Diplomatic Channels.

By IAR Desk

After months of conflict and escalating tensions, the US and Iran have unveiled a framework agreement aimed at halting hostilities and reopening diplomatic channels.

US President Donald Trump confirmed this on Sunday.

“The Deal with Islamic Republic of Iran is now complete. Congratulations to all! I hereby fully authorise the toll free opening of the Strait of Hormuz, and, simultaneously herewith, authorize the immediate removal of the United States Naval blockade. Ships of the World, start your engines. Let the oil flow.” President Trump posted on his Truth Social account early hours of June 15th.

The agreement is slated to be signed by both sides on Friday, 19 June in Geneva, Switzerland.

The deal between Tehran and Washington came as Israel was on high alert for possible missile fire after Iran vowed to retaliate against an Israeli strike in Beirut’s southern suburbs, also known as the Dahiyeh. Iran ultimately called off its planned missile strikes

The secretariat of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council said on Monday that the deal with the US includes the immediate suspension of hostilities on all fronts.

“Based on the agreements reached, the war and military operations on all fronts, including Lebanon, will end immediately and permanently as of tonight, and in addition, the naval blockade against Iran will end immediately and completely,” it said in a statement.

Iran’s Mehr News Agency said, quoting the 14-point memorandum of understanding that the US will release $12bn in frozen assets to Iran before the start of negotiations.

“Negotiations for a final agreement will be postponed until after the other party has fulfilled its obligations under the Memorandum of Understanding. The Islamic Republic of Iran appreciates the efforts of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan and the Government of Qatar. Peace be upon you, God’s mercy and blessing.”

Qatar and Pakistan have mediated the agreement.

Reuters reported that E4 nations including the United Kingdom, France, Germany ‌and Italy said on Sunday the countries were prepared to lift sanctions on Iran in response to steps on its nuclear program after the U.S. and Iran reached a deal to end their war. “Iran ‌must never acquire a nuclear weapon. We stand ready to work with the US, Iran and the IAEA to this end,” the leaders of the countries said in a joint statement.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has yet to comment on the agreement but the Jerusalem Post, quoting unnamed sources, said Israel will not leave Lebanon, but will not strike if Hezbollah respects ceasefire.

Other Israeli leaders have decried the deal. Minister of National Security, far-right Itamar Ben-Gvir “We are not partners to this agreement that does not ensure our security, and it does not bind us in any way. We must not compromise on any less than the dismantling of Hezbollah.”
