The challenge for India’s diplomacy therefore is to find a way out of the USA’s conflict with Iran (and also with Russia) so that its vital energy and maritime connectivity interests in the case of Iran remain unaffected.

Washington is aiming to cut Iran’s oil sales to zero, accompanying these actions with the escalation of US threats to Tehran in the event of any attack on U.S. forces or America’s allies in the Middle East. But Trump has also opened the door to Iran to return to negotiations with his administration
On a visit to Japan last month, U.S. President Donald Trump welcomed Abe’s help in dealing with Iran, highlighting what he called the “very good relationship” between Tokyo and Tehran. As a U.S. ally that also has good diplomatic relations with Iran, Japan could be in a unique position to mediate between the Islamic Republic and the United States.
