In a pre-recorded speech Ghani said the Afghan government had demonstrated the “commitment, compassion, and courage” to make hard decisions to hold direct peace talks with the Taliban but said this wouldn’t be enough.
All 15 members supported the resolution, tabled by the United States, which endorses a joint US-Afghan declaration on peace and an agreement signed between Washington and the Taliban.
The Taliban believes that such attacks will provide an opportunity for it to bargain from a position of greater strength and derive maximum concessions from the talks.
