Iran’s state TV has confirmed on Sunday March 1, 2026 that Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, is dead.

According to Chinese media around 40 high-ranking Iranian officials, including the head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, were also reported killed.

Iranian News Agency IRNA reports that according to Principle 111 of the Constitution, in the event of the demise, resignation, or dismissal of the Leader, the Assembly of Experts is obliged to take action as soon as possible to appoint and introduce a new Leader.

Until the introduction of the Leader, a council consisting of the President, the Head of the Judiciary, and one of the jurists of the Guardian Council, selected by the Expediency Discernment Council, shall temporarily assume all duties of the Leader.

If, during this period, any one of them is unable to carry out their duties for any reason, another person shall be appointed in their place to the council by the selection of the Assembly of Experts, maintaining the majority of jurists.

Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani has said the formation of the Interim Leadership Council will take place today. He confirmed that the groundwork was laid during a meeting yesterday, and the council is set to be formed as of now.
Early Iranian counter-strikes have targeted the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, and Kuwait—locations hosting US military bases or allied forces. Casualties in Iran exceed 200, including at least 108 killed in a girls’ school hit during the initial strikes, according to state media and Red Crescent reports. The attacks have disrupted air travel, oil shipments, and daily life across the region, with tensions continuing to escalate.
