BRICS adopts Kazan Declaration

On October 22, the 16th BRICS Summit opened in Kazan, the capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, Russia. This is the first summit after the expansion of the BRICS. On the 23rd, representatives of the member countries of the BRICS cooperation mechanism held closed and extended format meetings.
The BRICS summit, which was held for the first time with 10 members, also saw the participation of many leaders from the global South and East, as well as heads of international organizations, including UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. The day before, the leaders of the countries had already begun communicating in the capital of Tatarstan, holding an informal banquet and a series of bilateral talks.
The final declaration of the BRICS summit was adopted earlier today. It included an overall assessment of the world situation and long-term goals
The BRICS countries specifically pointed out in the final declaration of the summit:
* The importance of expanding cooperation on common interests and further building strategic partnerships
Remind all countries of their positions on the situation in Ukraine and its surrounding areas
* Concerned about the negative impact of illegal sanctions on the global economy
Calls for greater participation of the least developed countries, especially in Africa, in the global process
* Welcoming the strong interest shown by the global South in coming together
Points out mediation proposals for peaceful resolution of Ukrainian conflict through dialogue
* Expressing concern over escalating violence and worsening humanitarian crisis in Sudan, calling for ceasefire
Reaffirming the commitment to multilateralism and maintaining the central role of the United Nations in the international system
* Emphasizing the importance of continuing to implement the BRICS Economic Partnership Strategy 2025 in all its aspects
* Reaffirming support for comprehensive reform of the United Nations, including the Security Council, to make it more representative
* BRICS countries are welcome to use national currencies in financial transactions with their trading partners
Oppose unilateral measures under the pretext of addressing climate change
Condemns attacks on United Nations staff and threats to their safety, and calls on Israel to immediately cease such actions
* Welcomes the establishment of Haiti’s Transitional Presidential Council and Electoral Council to resolve crisis
Reaffirming decision to take measures to support WTO reform
* Calls for reform of the Bretton Woods institutions to expand the representation of developing countries, as appropriate
