China and Russia complete fourth joint naval patrol

Both countries have said that the drills wre not directed at any third party and had nothing to do with the current regional or international situation.

The navies of both countries had been patrolling in the waters of the western and northern Pacific Ocean. The Sino-Russian naval joint naval patrol formation is composed of the Chinese Navy missile destroyer Yinchuan , the missile frigate Hengshui and the Russian Navy “Perfect” frigate. Both sides are equipped with ship-borne helicopters and special operations personnel. The formation has successively carried out inspection and arrest, helicopter mutual landing and other similar exercises. During the exercise, the inspection and arrest teams of both sides boarded the “suspicious ship” on ship-borne boats and formed a mixed inspection and arrest team to conduct searches.
These patrols were the fourth in series of joint Sino-Russian naval patrols which both countries have  began engaging in since 2021. The Chinese and Russian joint fleet set sail from the waters near the south of Jeju Island, crossed the Osumi Strait, sailed south through the western Pacific Ocean, and entered the South China Sea from the Balintang Strait.
Both countries have said that the joint patrols were not directed at any third party and had nothing to do with the current regional or international situation.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, July 14, 2024, the People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) and the Russian Navy launched a joint naval exercise that will take place in the South China Sea. Joint Sea 2024 has been an ongoing event since 2012, according to a Russian Ministry of Defense release on the exercise.

The exercise, launched from the southern Chinese city of Zhanjiang, which is also the headquarters of the PLAN South Sea Fleet, began its sea phase on Monday, with ships leaving the port to begin drills in the South China Sea.

“During the maneuvers at the sea, the crews of the Pacific Fleet and the PLA Navy will conduct joint air defense exercises, anti-submarine exercises with the involvement of the naval anti-submarine aviation of the PLA, and train to replenish the stocks on the go. Sailors from the two countries will also take part in a rescue training exercise at the sea,” reads the Russian MOD statement.
