As reported by the Asian News International (ANI) on Thursday, July 16, Iran has refuted an Indian news report stating that New Delhi has been dropped out of the Chabahar – Zahedan Railway Project. One of the deputies of the Port and Maritime Organisation of Iran , Farhad Montaser was quoted by ANI as saying that Iran had not inked any deal with India regarding the project. Mr Montaser was further quoted by an Iranian news agency as saying that Iran has signed only two agreements with India for investments in Chabahar : one is related to the port’s machinery and equipment, and the other to India’s investment to tune of $150 million, as quoted by an Iran news agency.
The reimposed US sanctions have nothing to do with Iran – India cooperation in Chabahar, he said .
The United States had in 2018 agreed to a sanctions’ waiver on the Chabahar Port project under the Iran Freedom and Counter – Proliferation Act ( IFCA ) of 2012.
Earlier the president of Iran Hassan Rouhani had described the port as a vital part that would structure Iran’s economic future.
The ANI report further said that the Indian Public Sector Company – Ircon International – had pledged to provide all the essential services and the important fundings necessary.
