“It is critical that this council is resolute and coherent in putting the security forces on notice and standing with the people of Myanmar firmly, in support of the clear November election results,” Christine Schraner Burgener said.
He pointed to numerous security incidents since May 2019 that have heightened frictions to “new levels” and noted that they have served to underscore the urgent need to “work collectively to lower tension and prevent conflict”.
The Secretary-General also underlined that there is no military solution to the conflict and urged the sides to immediately cease all hostilities.
“I am afraid the ceasefire is not coming any time soon.”
