Kolkata Celebrates Russian Language Day and Russian National Poet Alexander Pushkin’s 225th Birthday

Kolkata, 6th June 2024: A grand celebration was organized to mark the Day of Russian Language and 225th Birth Anniversary of A.S.Pushkin, the National Poet of Russia at Gorky Sadan, Russian House in Kolkata.

Students and faculty members of Russian Language Institute of Culture, Ramakrishna Mission, Visva Bharari University, Shantinetetan and Institute of Russian Language, Russian House in Kolkata paid their tribute on this august occasion by rendering of songs based on poems of A.S.Puskin, (4 romances) songs on Pushkin (2 songs), popular Russian songs(4 songs), recitation of poems of A.S.Pushkin (9 poems) , Michael Lermentov (2 poems), two dances and illustrative audio drama “The Blizzard” from Tales of Belkina by A.S.Pushkin. Nearly 80 students of Russian language assembled for the event. Among them were alumni of who had studied  at the Institute of Russian Language in the decades of 80’s and 90’s. A colourful exhibition with copies of sketches and drawings by A.S.Pushkin and also portrait drawing of A.S.Pushkin by eminent Russian artists were exhibited, which received attraction and appreciation from the viewers.

On this occasion Mr Alexey Idamkin, Honourable Consul General of Russian Federation attended the celebration programme as Guest in Chief. In his address, Mr Idamkin appreciated the endeavor and wished all success to the students, pursuing Russian Language.

Mr Sergey Shushin, Director, Russian House in Kolkata welcomed the gathering of students and spoke about the significance and relevance of the auspicious occasion.

Subhojit Roy, a student of the Institute of Russian Language and also Founder and Director of LaCasa de los Poliglotas ,Institute of Foreign Languages and Cultures, presented a painting of Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin to the Russian House in Kolkata on the occasion of 225th Birth anniversary of the National Poet.

The celebration programme was conducted by Ms Madhabi Bhattacharya, Director Institute of Russian Language, Russian House in Kolkata.

Alexander Sergeevich Pushkin,  an 18th century romantic poet, is considered by Russians to be their greatest poet ever. He is also the Russian nati9nal poet. To honour and acknowledge his legacy, UNESCO in 2010 declared his birth date – 6th June – to be the International Day of Russian Language.  This Day was set by the decision of the UN Department of Public Information in 2010.
