Finally a ceasefire deal for Gaza has been hammered out by the UN Security Council.

On June 10, the UN Security Council adopted a resolution for a phased ceasefire plan in the Gaza Strip.

The draft was introduced by the USA, based on plan previously announced by US President Biden. 14 countries voted in favor, and Russia abstained.

Russia alleged that contours and specific details of the ceasefire plan had not been proposed to the Council by the mediators.

Meanwhile, HAMAS has signalled it’s acceptance of the UN Security Council ceasefire proposal.

A statement by the militant organisation said that “Hamas welcomes the Security Council’s resolution on a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip , a complete withdrawal of troops from the Gaza Strip, prisoner exchange, reconstruction, the return of displaced persons to their homes, the rejection of any demographic change or reduction of the territory of the Gaza Strip, and the provision of necessary assistance to our people in the Gaza Strip.”

The resolution seeks to open negotiations between Hamas fighters and the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu.

Response to the resolution is now awaited from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

In Israel , on Sunday, June 9,th, Benny Gantz resigned from Israels war cabinet. Criticizing Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over his handling of the war against Hamas, Ganz called for fresh elections.

However, according to analysts, Gantz’s departure is unlikely to affect the current Israeli emergency government.
