ADB for additional funding for Afghan agro project
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a grant of $18.28 million in additional financing for the Panj–Amu River Basin Sector Project.
The extra funding for the project, project seeking to boost agricultural productivity in northeastern Afghanistan, will enhance access to water.
In a statement, ADB said the extra funding would enhance the resilience of watersheds to disaster and climate risks by expanding project activities in Badakhshan, Kunduz, and Takhar provinces.
The project will also help improve water access and management in six more provinces — Samangan, Baghlan, Bamyan, Panjsher, Parwan and Wardak.
ADB Project Officer Mohammad Hanif Ayubi said: “Agriculture remains a major engine of growth for Afghanistan and plays an important role in improving the lives of the Afghans.”
He hoped the additional financing would help Afghanistan recover from the COVID-19 impact by improving water availability for irrigated agriculture and creating employment opportunities for rural communities.
